How Proper Wine Storage Practices Can Preserve Flavor

How a wine collection is stored and what type of environment it is stored it is very important as it can mean the difference between smashed bottles from in adequate wine shelves or spoiled wine as a result of exposure to higher than acceptable temperatures or UV light. For this reason many individuals will build custom wine cellars or wine rooms in their private residences if they have the money and collection to justify the expenditures.

Of course not all of us have the money to afford a fancy temperature controlled room used for the sole purpose of storing wine at the ideal temperature range of between 45 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Fortunately for short term storage of small sized wine collections are doable inside a relatively cool and dark pantry or spare bedroom closet. Alternately small refrigerator like wine coolers can act as mini electric power wine rooms by being able to store the bottles and keep them at the right temperature and humidity level.

Blackstone Winery a Merlot Producer

Almost anyone who buys a bottle of wine at their local grocery store or drug store is sure to notice three labels prominantly displayed, Gallo and Mondavi which have been around for well over a generation and Blackstone which is the new kid on the block. A good choice as a wine gift for those interested in quality wine at a reasonable price point, Blackstone long ago started making a name for themselves as a Merlot house in California. Almost unique today in that the winery doesn’t grow any of it’s own grapes, but instead purchases huge amounts from vineyards in incredibly varied locations. The results are often, the best under $15 Merlot on the planet. Total production now sits at a shade over five hundred thousand cases of wine each and every year, certainly a large enough number for the winery to become known on not only a national level, but an international one.
